Shower Thoughts: Shampoo
While I was taking a shower yesterday (you all know that the best thinking happens while showering), I was thinking about how my mom used to use Pantene Pro-V. She probably still does. But I was never allowed to use it because it was expensive. Instead, I got to use Suave.
Now, as an adult, I can use whatever shampoo I want. Currently, it’s Love, Beauty & Planet. Which is a pretty pricey, sulfate-free shampoo. And I thought about how my parents just roll their eyes at stuff like that. “Sulfate-free? You spend almost $10 for a 13oz bottle for sulfate-free shampoo???? There are cheaper alternatives. Sulfate-free is such a scam.”
Okay, we’ve never actually had this conversation but I’ve had conversations similar to this. But it had me thinking. What did my mom’s mom use for shampoo? What about my grandma’s mom? Commercial shampoo has been around for less than 100 years. Did my great grandma roll her eyes at her young adult daughter using shampoo while she washed her own with eggs? Probably not. Eggs are for eating lol.
Things change. Things improve. Sometimes I catch myself not liking something simply because it’s not what I grew up with. But things are meant to evolve with each generation. When shampoo was made back in the 1950’s, it didn’t have all those added chemicals. And when my hairdresser tells me that those chemicals are actually bad for my hair, I’m going to believe her because she went to college for that. I don’t think she’s telling me that to sell a product. She’s not making commission.
Why is it that we have a tendency to reject things that we aren’t used to? I’m not saying that we should accept everything new, but go out and learn. Have an open mind and soak up knowledge so you can decide whether or not this is something you want to subscribe to.
If you refuse to recycle because you didn’t recycle growing up so it isn’t a big deal, I’m sorry but you’re wrong.
When presented with information that isn’t what you know, take it in. Process it. And then decide how you want to proceed. And if you want to keep using Pantene (I don’t mean to pick on Pantene, by the way. It’s just what my mom uses), that’s fine. Let me use my sulfate-free shampoo without judgment. I don’t judge you for the shampoo you use.
But I will judge you for not recycling.
And for flushing meds down the toilet. Don’t do that. It’s bad. Find a medication drop off location. Usually pharmacies have them or know where you can find one. Be nice to the future of our planet. And be a little more open-minded. It’s good for the soul.
